Books, journals, and studies

I used to keep a journal in art school. It was a mix of private diary-like written entries, poems, photographs, and small artworks. I'm grateful to early mentors like Minneapolis poet Phebe Hanson for encouraging journal-keeping. I started keeping a journal again a few years ago, immediately following open heart surgery. The one I have right now is nearing its end; it's so full that it doesn't close properly, and it's got all these threads hanging over the edge from projects inside. People wonder what it is, but I will only share parts of it because it holds secrets and thoughts. I've started the same practice with smaller studies, without worry about the end result. This feels like my old authentic creative self - poor, wearing old jeans and converse, carrying my art journal... And that makes me happy.
